Abstract: Contrary to the idea of Paulo Freire, who understands education as liberating, Pierre Bourdieu and Passeron constructed a teaching theory based on symbolic violence, understanding education as a mechanism of domination and transmission of knowledge and ideals of the ruling classes by the pedagogical authorities for the new generation, a phenomenon that will always ensure that the ideals of the hegemonic classes of society are perpetuated. The theory of recognition proposed by Charles Taylor and Axel Honneth, which proposes the construction of the identity of the individual from the recognition of himself and of the other, in the form of the progressive typology of recognition and their respective violations, is also included in this scenario. that this idea, when inserted in an analysis of the mental illness of the university students allows to verify that their constant struggles in developing a university profile can end up developing in them psychopathological diseases, like anxiety and depression. In this context, since the Federal Constitution of 1988 establishes education as a fundamental right (articles 6 and 205 to 214) and affirms the dignity of the human person as the foundation of the Brazilian Democratic State of Law (article 1), it makes it is necessary to analyze the impact exerted by educational institutions on students' lives, aiming to establish a relationship between the early mental illness of the latter and the processes of symbolic violence exercised by the former, based on the constant struggle for recognition of students in the environment academic.
